Adult Education

The Adult Education ministry at St. Nicholas seeks to equip its parishioners to participate in the life of the Church. Currently, there are three main components to this ministry: the Scripture/Bible Study Group, Catechetical Lessons, and Online Home Study.

If you are interested in joining any of our adult education programs, we would love to have you join us. Please contact Father George Kokhno at gkokhno@gmail.com.

Orthodoxy 101

This course explores, through lectures and seminar discussions, the historical evolution and theological meaning of the core liturgical rites for the Divine Eucharist in the Orthodox Church. This course also offers a first introduction to Fr Alexander Schmemann’s concept of liturgical theology, as it is necessary to ground Schmemann’s modern contribution in historical roots, viz., the patristic writings about the Liturgy from the 2nd-14th centuries. Participation in real time via skype is welcome. Guest lectures are welcome. The lectures/discussions will be taught and analyzed in an estimated series of 60 one-hour lessons. The lessons will be mainly in English.

Start date: September 1st.
Class Times: Sundays 12:30-1:30pm,
Location: St. Nicholas Library (in the annex building)
Prerequisites: None
For more information, contact: Fr. George Kokhno or John Stepanchuk.

Scripture Study Group

In the Scripture Study Group, we deepen our knowledge of the Orthodox Tradition by studying and discussing the Old Testament and New Testaments, Church liturgical literature, and select works, homilies, and letters of the Church Fathers and other sources. We often welcome guest lecturers, theologians from Orthodox seminaries, and other experts to offer talks to our adult audience, and then allow time for questions and discussion. Our class meets every Saturday at 3:30pm at St. Nicholas in the annex. Occasionally, we analyze sermons, lectures, and organize discussion groups and book clubs around basic topics. We offer a variety of classes; some of them are intended primarily for inquirers and catechumens, while others may require some background knowledge, but all are invited and welcome to attend.

Catechetical Lessons

The Catechetical Lessons offered at St. Nicholas Cathedral are comprehensive and accessible to the modern inquirer. They rely heavily on the Holy Scriptures, elaborate on the Nicene Creed and the Lord’s Prayer, and comprise a patristic catechism, appropriate for catechumens and Orthodox Christians alike.

Online Home Study

Coming soon

Online Home Study
that accommodates the inquirer’s busy schedule will soon be available. This will allow you to study at your own pace. We recommend this class to everyone who has never studied the Orthodox faith, whether they were born into the Church, recently converted, or desire to convert to Orthodoxy. To fulfill the requirements for such a class, meet with Fr. George Kokhno or Fr. Valery Shemchuk, and we will set up a schedule of study, help guide you in your spiritual journey, and try to answer your questions.
